What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is an act of violence or aggressive behavior wherein the victim is generally our near ones, who simply can be called as our family members. Any kind of abusing or forcing can be termed as domestic violence. Here the victims can be any person like women, men, children, aged people, disabled. In Hindi, domestic violence is known as घरेलूहिंसा. Domestic violence is also called domestic abuse, family violence. Abusive behavior includes frightening, hurt, humiliate, insult, terrorize, blame, injure or wound someone, etc.

Different ways or types of abuse

· Physical Abuse (pushing, slaps, hitting with object)

· Mental Abuse (isolation from family and friends)

· Emotional Abuse (threatening, ignoring the request)

· Economical Abuse (not allowing to access money or funds)

· Verbal Abuse (using rude words, refusing to talk)

Domestic violence occurs when any parents or guardians or relative uses physical violence, coercion, threats, intimidation, force to compel, isolation, emotional abuse to gain or maintain power and control over the children. These types of abuse resulted to the children as the victims of domestic violence.

· Dominating behaviour

Impacts of Domestic Violence

· Anxiety

· Depression

· Eating and sleeping disturbances

· Health issues like headaches

· Stops children development

· Sense of fear

· Suicide

· Withdrawal of love

· Mental disorders

In this pandemic Domestic violence against the children is growing at an alarming rate in India as well as in other countries. Parent need to know how domestic violence affects the overall development of child's mind. Child’s mind can scar them for life leading depression and mental illness. One of the most common case scenario is when children who come from abusive household starts to normalize abuse and become abusers themselves. COVID-19 created additional situation for abuse which resulted in domestic violence as it forced people into lockdown and people worried about the money, health and the reasons which are mentioned above may directly or indirectly effect the victim i.e. children in this pandemic more then ever. Due to this trap of lockdown children get victimized by the abusers. Therefore, the children of this country suffering from such malpractices which have no stringent laws which can protect them from the abusers.
